Introduction of the Square Park

The Square Park used to be an old urban area with dense buildings, irregular roads system, heavy population and a poor green space rate of 5 percent. For guaranteeing the implementation of the project, a large scale resettlement of local residents and units was launched on October. 7th, 2000. By the end of December, 2000, the total amount of resettlement reached 4837 households and the total construction area dismantled amounted to 170,600 m².Feb.1st, 2001 witnessed the beginning of an 117,000 m² green space development plan that included the construction of 90,000m² green spaces, 20,000m² roads and 6,800m² water body. The whole project was completed on June. 10th, 2001, and was named as the Square Park. The Park is one of the classic projects of the public green space in Shanghai, helping promote the local investment climate and enhance the comprehensive function of the city.

The Square Park, composed of 13 parts and reaching the star level of large-scale public green space, lies in the boundary sector of three districts (Huang Pu, Lu Wan and Jin An), where people can enjoy not only Chinese-style alleys with bridges and streams, but Western-style large green fields and open spaces. The design of the Park comes from the Landscape Design Office of Montreal, Canada and features a perfect combination of eastern and western cultures. Thus varied statues of typical western style are introduced to demonstrate traditional Chinese virtues such as the brotherhood of our people and affection among families, or between teachers and students. The design is to achieve ecological harmony, highlighting the theme of GREEN. The GREEN theme is mainly represented through water and featured with the color blue and green. The majority of plants in the Park are arbors. The smart allocation of evergreen arbors and defoliate arbors, conifers and hardwoods creates a harmonious ecological scene and exhibit the color-diversity of the plants, which tends to convey a pleasant combination of being dynamic and stable, and the harmony of humans and nature. Surrounded by the nearby high buildings and elevated bridge roads, the Park can fully demonstrate the green space art of Shanghai and typical city garden. Meanwhile, the Park brings about three effects: (1) green island effect, (2) environmental protection effect and (3) visual effect. These effects make the Park a brilliant landscape in the center of downtown Shanghai. But several years ago, this area, known as a hot island, is heavy in traffic and famous with a noisy, dusty and severely polluted environment. Contrasted with the former poor environmental quality, the newly established park becomes a demonstrative project relating to the downtown environmental protection. It is also a brilliant scenery with the theme of ecological harmony.
