Quality of Sonic Environment

In 2007, the regional environmental noise in Shanghai met the standard required for corresponding functional regions, but that of traffic noise failed to do so.

Regional Ambient Noise
In 2007, the average equivalent sound level of regional ambient noise in Shanghai at daytime was 56.8 dB (A), 0.2 dB (A) higher than that in 2006; at night it was 49.4 dB (A), 0.3 dB (A) lower than that in 2006.

The data monitored in the past years (2003¡ª2007) showed that on the whole, the regional environmental noise in Shanghai has met the standard required of corresponding functional regions staying stable.

Traffic Noise
In 2007, the average equivalent sound level of traffic noise in Shanghai at daytime was 71.9 dB (A), 0.1 dB (A) lower than that in 2006; at night it was 65.9 dB (A), 1.0 dB (A) higher than that in 2006.? The average traffic flow on main roads and communication arteries at daytime and night were respectively 2,192 vehicles per hour and 1,170 vehicles per hour, and compared with those in 2006, 48 vehicles more per hour at daytime and 170 vehicles more per hour at night.

The data monitored in the past years (2003¡ª2007) showed that traffic noise in Shanghai has never been controlled to meet the standard required for corresponding ?functional areas; it went up during the period from 2003 to 2004 and then stayed almost the same from 2004 through 2007.
